PRIVATE CLASSES

Do you want to improve your yoga practice or deal with any specific issues you experience in your body? Having one-on-one yoga instructions can then benefit you enormously. Traditionally yoga was taught by one yoga teacher to one student, making this the most direct and effective method of transmission. Private classes can provide a space in which you can connect more with your own body and mind; a space for you to discuss with the teacher your very unique difficulties or injuries, so to receive instructions and advice to suit your individual needs. You will progress further more quickly and safely in your own practice.

Private classes can be scheduled at the school outside regular class times; please discuss your requirements directly with the teacher in person or via email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Below are the standard fees for private classes, based on 1 person only. Please inquire about other options for private groups.

- 60 minutes €65
- 90 minutes €95
- 5 x 60 minutes €295

More information on private classes can be found here.

CLASSES EXPLAINED

Astanga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressively more challenging series of postures. This process produces intense internal heat and a purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. It is a vigorous moving mediation that helps us develop a strong, light body and a quiet, steady mind. We offer two types of astanga classes: led classes or mysore-style.

Astanga Led classes

Led classes are group 'talked through' classes, where all students are guided verbally through the given sequence of postures. This is most likely what you are used to if you have practiced yoga before - a teacher giving general instructions to all students in the group at the same time. All led classes follow the traditional sequence of the Primary Series, one of the most established and practiced dynamic yoga sequences in the world, designed to specifically re-align the body and strengthen the nervous system. Also called ‘Yoga Chikitsa’ or yoga therapy, this series has a therapeutic action of cleansing and toning for the whole body, mind and senses. While working always on the same series of postures, the pace and the amount of postures covered in the class will vary depending on the level of the class.

. BEGINNER: suitable for all new students and beginners, the fundamental elements of Astanga Yoga are explained; the class is led through the sun salutations, the standing postures and moves than to a (shorter) finishing sequence, at a slower pace, allowing for extra breaths and modifications where necessary. A modified sequence is sometimes used in beginners classes, to make the poses more accessible to all students. The class ends with a short relaxation.

. ALL: suitable for regular students and beginners with some previous experience with Astanga Yoga; this class is led through "half primary", meaning the standing postures, half of the sitting postures (somewhere to the Marichyasanas) and a full finishing sequence. The pace is a little faster and there are less instructions given by the teacher. The class ends with a short relaxation.

. EXPERIENCED: this is a fairly demanding long class, which takes you through the full grace of the entire primary series of Astanga Vinyasa Yoga, in a talked through format or sometimes in its more traditional 'counted vinyasa' format. Very little commentary or demonstration is given throughout this class, where a consistent pace and concentration is generated by breath, movement and attention. At the end of the practice, there is time for full relaxation. This class is recommended for students with a regular practice only, it is really not suitable for beginners.

Mysore-style

Mysore-Style classes represent the traditional way to learn Astanga Vinyasa Yoga. Mysore-style is named after the town in southern India where Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson R. Sharath Jois have taught the practice continuously for over 60 years. In these classes students learn the sequences gradually and practice them under the direct supervision and adjustments of the teacher. Because there are no ‘group instructions’, each student receives a personalized guidance from the teacher, so that the practice is learnt slowly and progressively, virtually one posture at a time, while committing the sequence to memory. You will start with a shorter practice and as you gain strength, stamina, flexibility and focus, poses will be added on to your sequence. An average mysore practice would be approximately 90 minutes.

. BEGINNER (Astanga Mysore) : dedicated to new students, as there is more verbal guidance and instructions from the teacher, to make sure the foundation of the practice is taught. The starting time is fixed (everybody start together) and your practice - being at the beginning - will last up to one hour. You don't need a Delight Mysore Membership to join these beginners classes.

. EXPERIENCED (Mysore Program) : less verbal guidance (and more hands-on adjustments!), you progress at your own pace through the practice, as the teacher adds at times one new pose to your practice. You don't have to be practicing a whole series to join this mysore class, but you have to be knowledgeable of at least part of the series. Not ideal for new students (please go to a mysore beginner class to start with). The starting time is flexible, make sure you have enough time to complete your practice before the class ending time. You will need to upgrade your Delight Membership to a Mysore Membership to join the Mysore Program classes.

PRACTICAL INFO FOR YOUR PRACTICE

Anyone can practice yoga. You don’t need to be flexible, fit or spiritual to start Astanga yoga and benefit from it. All you need is to step on the mat and get started. 99% practice, 1% theory. We understand that starting something new can be sometimes hard. You will feel challenged at times, but also inspired and rewarded as your practice begins to grow. Astanga yoga is always based on the individual, it is a personal journey without any competition or comparison to others. Come to class with an open mind and experience the power of this style of yoga!

Here are some tips to make your practice more comfortable and enjoyable from the very beginning:

• Wear comfortable clothes and remove your watch and jewellery for the practice.

• Practice bare feet. Sticky mats are provided in the studio, but you are more than welcome to bring your own one. If you use our mats, please clean it at the end of your practice.

• Come clean to the practice and be prepared to sweat – it is an important part of this practice, which carries great detoxifying benefits for your body. Do not wear perfume or after shave. We DO have showers at the school! However it is recommended not to shower for at least one hour after practice.

• Don’t eat a large meal for a period of 2-3 hours before your practice. If you have special dietary needs, eat a piece of fruit about 1 hour before class.

• Don’t drink water while practicing yoga as it distracts you and cools your body down. Make sure you drink plenty of pure water (or herbal teas) during the day.

• For ladies, it is recommended not to practice during menstruation at least for the first 2-3 days. If you feel like practicing, then take it easy and avoid doing inversions, particularly the ones at the end of the practice (shoulder stand, head stands, etc).

• It is tradition in Astanga Yoga not to practice on Full Moon and New Moon days, particularly in the hours directly prior to the peak of the moon cycle. On these days, there are NO morning mysore classes (we offer a pranayama or a meditation class instead). However we continue to offer evening mysore classes during such days, and we always remind you of the time of the moon peak and - should you decide to practice - we ask you to be particularly cautious with what you do and to take it easy. During Mysore classes, we do not offer a lot of hands-on adjustments. Curious about the Astanga Moon days? Check Tim Miller's website.

• It is very important to take rest at the end of the practice; at least 5-10 minutes, with 15-20 even better. Allow the time your body needs to get back to normal breath and to fully relax. Cover up with warm clothes during relaxation time or with a blanket.

• Ideal time for this practice is the early morning, as it invigorates and energizes you for the day. If you practice in the evening, allow for extra cooling and relaxation time and the end of your practice.

• If you have any injury or medical conditions, please inform the teacher at the beginning of the class, so that you can be advised on how to modify the practice if necessary.

• In case of pregnancy – congratulations first of all! Please inform the teacher straight away if you know you are pregnant, so that you can be advised of the options you have. Bear in mind that Sri K. Pattabhi Jois has always advised regular practitioner of Astanga Yoga not to practice in the first 3 months of pregnancy and for as long as you are breast feeding your baby. If you are new to Astanga Yoga, we would advise you to join a pregnancy yoga course at this point of your life.
